How to Get Court Records
The Jefferson County Clerk of Court keeps both District and County Court files. You will find that office at Jefferson Combined Court. First run the free docket search to pin down a case number and setting. Want a live ROA? Use an approved vendor for that. Then send the official record and document request for the actual paper. Walk-up service works too, and so do the courthouse terminal, email, mail, and the phone.
- Identify the case by number, party, year, class, county, and division.
- Choose an ROA, exact filed paper, certified or exemplified copy, or transcript.
- Submit online, email jeffcorecordrequest@judicial.state.co.us, mail the form, call Records, or visit the counter.
- Use the courthouse public terminal when remote access omits an otherwise public electronic record.
- Pay the quoted search, copy, certification, retrieval, research, or postage charge before fulfillment.
The statewide form used for Jefferson County promises an ordinary response within three business days. That assumes no extenuating circumstances. Read that as a goal, not same-day delivery. Old off-site files, redaction, and broad requests all slow the clerk down.
Note: Give the exact filing title and date whenever you can. It cuts clerk research time and avoids copy charges you never needed.
Jefferson County Court Record Channels
The Records and Research window handles in-person requests. It is open Monday through Thursday, noon to 4:00 p.m. It is closed Friday. Those Jefferson County hours run shorter than the main clerk counter and the building itself. Show up outside the window. You can still complete the form and drop it in the Records-window basket. That basket is not the atrium filing drop box, so keep them straight.
Records staff answer two lines: 720-772-2570 and 720-772-2571. Mail goes to Jefferson Combined Court, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO 80401. One more split to remember: the same clerk holds state District and County Court records. Municipal clerks keep city-code and municipal-traffic cases.

Types of Court Records
Think of a Jefferson County court record in layers. The ROA comes first. It is a brief, dated summary listing charges, sentences, minute orders, and other entries. Beneath it sits the filed document itself, the actual complaint, motion, order, judgment, or ticket that the index names. A certified or exemplified copy adds the clerk's authentication on top. Spoken proceedings sit apart entirely, in the transcript process.
- Jefferson County registers of action and public docket summaries
- Jefferson County complaints, petitions, motions, answers, tickets, and protection orders
- Jefferson County minute orders, signed orders, judgments, dispositions, and sentence orders
- Jefferson County transcripts of judgment, certificates of satisfaction, and appeal records
- Court-reporter transcripts or approved transcriptions of spoken proceedings
CCE access is narrow. An eligible opted-in party may see documents from that party's own case. It is no public archive for Jefferson County, and approved ROA vendors do not sell filed images either.
Jefferson County Court Record Choices
Match the product to the task. A Jefferson County ROA works well for tracing what happened and dating an order. Need the order's full terms? Request the order itself. Certification only matters when a recipient requires the clerk's seal. When the words were spoken in court and never reduced to a filed paper, order a transcript instead.
| Product | Best Use | Custodian |
|---|---|---|
| ROA | Chronological case history and filing index | Approved vendor or Clerk |
| Filed document | Full text of a complaint, motion, order, or judgment | Clerk of Court |
| Certified copy | Authenticated version of a filed record | Clerk of Court |
| Transcript | Spoken testimony or hearing proceedings | Court reporter or transcriber |
This distinction heads off a common error. A docket line saying an order was filed is not the signed order itself.
What a Court Record Contains
A public Jefferson County court record can show the court, division, judicial officer, permitted parties, filings, settings, and outcome. How much appears remotely depends on the record class and the access rule. Contact data, victim and witness details, financial specifics, medical or treatment material, and protected identifiers stay sealed even when the caption is public. A public caption does not open them.
| Case Number | Filing year, case class, and sequence, such as 2019T999999. |
|---|---|
| Pleadings | Accessible petitions, complaints, answers, motions, and responses. |
| Orders and Judgments | Minute orders and signed rulings, including public disposition terms. |
| Register of Action | The dated list of filings, settings, minute orders, and outcome events. |
| Exhibits and Attachments | Only those open under access rules; dangerous or protected items may be withheld. |
The ROA lists each accessible item with its date. When wording, signature, or full terms matter, request the paper itself.
Jefferson County Transcript Records
A court reporter or transcriber makes a transcript. The Records counter does not copy one out. The form wants the case number, county, caption, division, judicial officer, event date and time, appeal status, and whether you need all or part of the event. Payment comes first. Ordinary service runs $3.60 per page on a 30-day tier. Expedited service runs $4.35 per page on a 10-day tier. Overnight and hourly tiers need a court order and cost $5.85 or $6.85 per page. Already-existing copies range from $1.35 to $1.85 per page, and small-claims appeal audio is $35.
Note: Certification authenticates a filed paper. A transcript records speech. The two products cannot stand in for each other.
Jefferson County Federal Court Records
State and federal files for Jefferson County sit in separate systems. One is not a branch of the other. The U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado FAQ explains PACER, CM/ECF, and public-terminal access for federal cases.
A federal case tied to a Jefferson County event lives in a federal court, not in the state Clerk's docket. The state file stays silent on it no matter how strong the county connection is. Check the sovereign and the court where the filing actually happened. For Jefferson County bankruptcy matters, the U.S. District of Colorado handles them, and its official site shows the filings, forms, and court records for that court.
Federal appeals from Jefferson County head to the Tenth Circuit. That court's clerk contact page lists the current ways to reach its records office and request docket material.
Every Jefferson County image points to a different federal record office. None of them stands in for Jefferson Combined Court, which still holds the county's state trial court records and docket.
Certified Copies and Fees
A plain copy just reproduces a filed record anyone can view. Certified and exemplified copies add the Clerk's authentication. That costs $20 per document on top of copy charges. Pay first. If the current statewide fee language differs from Jefferson's older local PDF, the statewide wording controls.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Filed-record copy | $0.25 per page |
| Party or party-attorney copy cap | $15 total |
| Certified or exemplified document | $20 per document |
| Name search | Up to $5 |
| Research and redaction | $30 per hour after the first hour, billed by quarter hour |
| Off-site retrieval and postage | Actual cost |
Note: CJD 06-01 sets the party-copy cap and its waiver rules. That cap does not turn every public request into a flat $15 order. Also, certification is charged by document, so several certified papers in one request can mean several authentication fees.
Jefferson County Off-Site Court Records
The clerk publishes no verified cutoff for which Jefferson County files have been digitized. Blank results in the remote tools do not mean an older case is gone. Give Records staff the party, the case year, class, sequence, and the exact item you want. A file stored off site may carry a retrieval cost the clerk has to quote.
A tight request cuts down paid research and redaction time. No case number? Staff can run a name search for up to $5. When the ROA pinpoints the order you need, list its title and date instead of asking for the whole file.
The public terminal is one more option. Under CJD 05-01, Judicial Department facilities may open certain public electronic records and e-filed documents. Remote public access does not offer those.
Jefferson County Record Request Fields
The online form starts with who you are: identity, contact details, and address. Then it asks about the case itself. That means the case number, case type, filing year, county, party information, and any other identifying facts. Record-specific choices follow for family, criminal, civil, and probate matters. An option there lets you select the ROA and request a certified or exemplified copy.
Criminal requests can target the complaint or information. They can also target the disposition or sentence, a protection order, or a ticket. Civil choices cover a judgment order. They also include a transcript or satisfaction of judgment, and a protection order. Probate lists letters, wills, trusts, applications, petitions, closing papers, and claims. Picking the right item lets the clerk route the request without a broad file search.
Jefferson County Court Record Timing
The three-business-day language on the statewide form describes the ordinary response. It is not a promise for a large, archived, sealed, or redaction-heavy file. Such a file may not be copied that fast. Staff may need to pull off-site material or review protected data. They may also calculate a quote, or send a transcript request to a reporter.
Work from the docket or ROA first and save real time. Note the exact document name and filing date, then ask only for that item. Add a working email and phone number. That lets the Clerk clear up a class, party, or certification question before costs climb.
Public Access and Sealed Records
CJD 05-01 controls access to Colorado court-case records. Colorado criminal justice records also answer to C.R.S. sections 24-72-301 and following, above all sections 304 and 305. Juvenile access turns mainly on sections 19-1-301 and following. CORA covers executive and local-agency records, but it never overrides the court directive for a judicial case file.
Key rules:
Chief Justice Directive 05-01 controls inspection, remote access, exclusions, vendors, fees, and correction for court-case records.
C.R.S. ยงยง 24-72-301 et seq. permit reasonable rules and withholding of criminal justice records when law, order, or public interest requires it.
P.A.I.R.R. 2 is the route for Judicial Branch administrative records, not a named case file.
Sealed, suppressed, restricted, juvenile, adoption, and mental-health records can all be withheld. So can other protected material. Medical and treatment files, financial account numbers, deposited wills, presentence reports, and protected victim identifiers may need redaction or a flat denial. Bring government photo identification and proof of authority if you qualify for access. Keep in mind that a public caption or docket entry does not open every exhibit, attachment, or protected detail to inspection.
Jefferson County Court Record Custody
The elected Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder does not keep divorce, hearing, criminal-justice, or court case files. Court records belong to the Clerk of Court at Jefferson Combined Court. A municipal case goes to the clerk in Lakewood, Arvada, Westminster, Wheat Ridge, Golden, or whichever city issued it.
County-agency records travel under CORA. Judicial management records use P.A.I.R.R. 2. A named District or County Court file falls under CJD 05-01 and the court request form. Keeping these routes straight is the quickest path to the office that actually holds the docket.
Missing a case number? Start with the Jefferson County case search. Then come back with the year, class, sequence, division, and exact document title.
