How to Search Criminal Dockets
The free Colorado Judicial Branch Docket Search arrives with Jefferson County already selected. It covers public hearing settings rather than a full criminal register of actions. Enter a known date plus at least one more field. A Jefferson County case number works best. Break it into the four-digit year, the class letter, and the numeric sequence. Name and attorney searches are there too when the number is unknown.
A full Jefferson County criminal docket search usually takes more than one channel. The judiciary-approved CoCourts service sells real-time ROA access. It is not a certified court record. It also shows no filed document images. The courthouse public terminal can surface electronic material that remote access will not. Call criminal staff at 720-772-2590, or ask the assigned division to confirm a current setting. Records requests go through the official online form, email, mail, or the Records window.
- Check the Jefferson County court name and case class before searching. A city ordinance case stays with its municipal clerk.
- Open the Jefferson County state docket search, choose a date, and enter the year, class, and sequence or a party name.
- Read the Jefferson County hearing type, appearance type, location, courtroom, and duration on the matching result.
- Use CoCourts or request a Jefferson County ROA when the full chronology matters, then request the exact filed paper from the Clerk.
- Ask for certification from Jefferson County only when an authenticated disposition or other formal copy is needed.
Parties eligible for Colorado Courts E-Filing can pull documents from their own opted-in cases there. It is not a Jefferson County public browsing archive. Transcripts of spoken proceedings follow a separate request path through the reporter or transcriber.
Jefferson County Criminal Docket Classes
The letter in a Jefferson County case number marks its class, not the grade of the charge. That class decides which criminal docket path applies. Watch for felony moves. A case can open as a Jefferson County Court complaint and pick up a new District Court number after transfer, so searching only the later number may hide the first stage of the record.
- CR
- A District Court criminal matter, commonly used for a felony after filing or transfer.
- M
- A County Court misdemeanor case.
- T or R
- State traffic classes maintained with the County Court record.
- JD
- A juvenile category with access limits that differ from an adult public case.
Take 2026CR1234. Enter it as year 2026, class CR, and sequence 1234. The state interface may space those Jefferson County parts differently. Keep every digit intact. Move carefully between a calendar result, an ROA vendor, and a record request.
Note: A missing result may simply mean the wrong class, a changed felony number, restricted access, or off-target search criteria. That is not the same as no case at all.
What a Criminal Docket Shows
A Jefferson County criminal ROA opens with the case number, county, division, assigned judicial officer, class, and status. It then logs parties and counsel, charges, settings, filed papers, minute orders, pleas, findings, and the final disposition. The free calendar answers scheduling questions. The ROA tells the longer story. Neither gives the actual text of a complaint, motion, or order named in an entry.
| Case Number | Four-digit year, criminal class, and sequence, such as 2026CR1234. |
|---|---|
| Charge | The filed accusation and classification. A charge alone is not a conviction. |
| Setting | Date, time, duration, hearing type, appearance type, location, and courtroom. |
| Plea and Finding | The response to the charge and the court or jury result, when public. |
| Disposition | How each charge ended and any public sentence information. |
| Filing List | Chronological entries for motions, responses, minute orders, and other papers. |
Ordinary remote access excludes contact data, victim and witness details, embedded criminal histories, detailed finances, presentence reports, and medical records. Bond-related entries may show up in Jefferson County, while sensitive financial detail stays limited.
Jefferson County Criminal Docket Limits
Remote access to a Jefferson County criminal docket is built around public case facts. It is not every detail the case gathered. The public side shows a charge, plea, finding, sentence, judge, setting, and the filed-event list where allowed. Free text, contact data, victim or witness details, presentence reports, and embedded histories can be withheld or redacted. Much of the financial information can be withheld too.
That line matters when a short ROA tempts a quick conclusion. A bond order entry may be public while its supporting data is not. A generic treatment-related entry may appear while the assessment stays protected. When the exact public order matters, request that named paper from the Jefferson County Clerk. Let the court run its access review.
Jefferson County Criminal Docket Channels
The most common Jefferson County mistake is expecting the free docket search to show the whole case. It answers a narrower question: when and where is a public hearing set? A paid ROA tracks what public events have been entered over time, and the Clerk supplies the underlying papers plus official authenticated copies.
| Channel | Best Use | Key Limit |
|---|---|---|
| State docket search | Find a hearing date, type, room, and appearance mode | Not the full history |
| CoCourts ROA | Review a real-time event chronology | Fee-based, no document images, not certified |
| Public terminal | Inspect public electronic material at court | Requires a courthouse visit |
| Jefferson Clerk request | Get an ROA, complaint, order, disposition, or certified copy | Fees and access rules apply |
The Judicial Branch Access Guide explains this Jefferson County split. Corrections to vendor data must go through the court that originated the entry.
Stages on a Criminal Docket
A Jefferson County criminal docket unfolds in time order. A complaint or information opens the formal charge history. Advisement and bond orders may come next. An eligible felony can get a preliminary hearing before the case moves to District Court, where arraignment records the plea. Motions, responses, orders, conferences, and resets fill out the middle of the ROA.
Docket flow: Filing › Arraignment › Pretrial › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
Treat the Jefferson County flow as a map, not a script. Not every case walks through every step. A plea can make a trial unnecessary. A dismissal may close one Jefferson County charge while others keep going. Entries after sentence are possible too. Jefferson County appeals and post-conviction filings show up on the docket well after the case seems finished. So read the status line and everything that follows before treating an early charge or setting as the answer.
Jefferson County Criminal Competency Docket
A Competency Court docket opened in the First Judicial District on January 31, 2024. Its purpose is restoration. Competency questions can pause a criminal case in its tracks. Think of it as a specialized docket intervention rather than a new records office. The case number stays in the ordinary Jefferson County criminal system. It follows the same public-access rules as any other case.
Keep public talk about the program at the program level. A Jefferson County public ROA may show that a competency-related event happened. Medical, psychological, and treatment details can still be protected. Jefferson County Recovery Court and Behavioral Health Court earned state accreditation in November 2024. Naming those programs in court does not turn treatment records into public material.
Jefferson County Criminal Docket Dispositions
The local request form offers a menu. Pick from complaint or information, disposition or sentence order, protection order, ticket, or ROA. One caution. A docket line saying an order was filed is not the order itself. For the actual document, use the official record and document request. Name Jefferson County, the party, filing year, class, sequence, and the exact item you want.
You can also walk up to the Records window at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden. Email jeffcorecordrequest@judicial.state.co.us, or send a request by mail. Staff answer at 720-772-2570 or 720-772-2571. That window opens Monday through Thursday from noon to 4:00 p.m. and closes Friday, even though other courthouse services run longer hours. After hours, drop a completed request in the Records-window basket.
The Colorado Courts E-Filing page for non-attorneys is the official source for what appears next.
It lays out the Jefferson County party-access route for eligible opted-in cases. CCE itself is no public Jefferson County criminal archive.
Which Court Holds Criminal Dockets
Felony cases live in Jefferson County District Court. Jefferson County Court handles misdemeanors, state traffic matters, and felony complaints before any transfer. Both sit inside Jefferson Combined Court and share one Clerk of Court. The shared clerk does not blur the jurisdiction line, though. A transfer can spawn a new District Court CR number once the County Court complaint stage is done.
Municipal courts run their own city-code and municipal-traffic dockets apart from the Jefferson County state system. A citation from Lakewood, Arvada, Westminster, Wheat Ridge, or Golden may never surface in a Jefferson County state criminal search. That happens if it charges a city offense. So read the court name on the paperwork. The elected Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder is a separate office. It holds none of these court files.
Once the right court is settled, the Jefferson County case search walks through the available fields. It also covers the restricted-result problems that come with them.
Jefferson County Criminal Docket Routing
The police agency on a ticket does not tell you where the Jefferson County docket lives. A city officer can route a summons to municipal court. The officer can also route it to Jefferson County state court. Arvada and Westminster straddle county lines too. Let the printed court box, case class, and number decide. Your docket search may belong with a city clerk, Jefferson County Combined Court, or another county's state system.
A municipal judgment does not fold into the Jefferson County portal. An appeal may go to Jefferson County District Court for record review under the applicable notice. The original city docket stays with the municipal clerk. A felony, by contrast, follows Jefferson County Court and District Court procedure. It never needs a municipal filing first.
Jefferson County Criminal Docket E-Filing
Colorado Courts E-Filing carries Jefferson County filings between registered users and the court. Attorneys rely on it across broad case classes. Eligible Jefferson County self-represented parties can register. They may opt into access for their own supported matters. Even so, it does not replace the free Jefferson County criminal calendar. Nor does it replace the paid ROA channel, or a Jefferson County Clerk request for a public document in an unrelated case.
The official attorney filing page appears in the next manifest image.
The filing system explains how a Jefferson County docket entry can land only after a paper reaches the court. Public access still turns on CJD 05-01 and the record's class.
Jefferson County Criminal Docket Access Rules
The current public-access policy source is the CJD 05-01 landing page.
That directive splits Jefferson County remote fields from courthouse inspection and protected material. It also flags the Jefferson County records that stay restricted or sealed.
Jefferson County Criminal Docket Resets
Not every Jefferson County court date is the same thing. A preliminary hearing is not an arraignment. Neither is a trial, a motions hearing, a pretrial conference, or sentencing. So read the entry for what kind of setting it is, not just the date. When a criminal docket setting moves, the change is never made by a phone call alone. A judicial officer has to grant the continuance first. The new date then shows up in an entered order or in a later docket setting.
To confirm a reset in Jefferson County, work the chain in order. Start with your current order or ticket, check the free calendar, then the ROA. After that, call the assigned division coordinator during the published setting window. The Jefferson County Clerk comes last. If the Jefferson County calendar and an older notice disagree, the assigned division sorts it out. A Jefferson County public virtual courtroom link is just the technical route in. It does not give you permission to appear remotely.
Never skip a listed appearance because of an unapproved request. An old entry is not a reason either. Nor is a guess that your lawyer got the reset.
Public Access and Sealed Criminal Dockets
The public side of a Jefferson County criminal docket can carry a lot: charges, pleas, findings, sentences, the assigned judge, hearing settings, judgments, orders, and a list of filed documents. Access still has limits. Juvenile categories, sealed cases, presentence reports, victim data, treatment evaluations, and protected identifiers may be restricted, suppressed, redacted, or simply unavailable online.
A blank Jefferson County search result does not mean the case never existed. Bad search criteria, a changed case number, an old file stored off-site, a record that is not remote, suppression, or sealing could all be the cause. Bring government photo identification if you need lawful access. The Jefferson County Clerk, not a vendor, makes that call under the governing rule and any case-specific order.
Key access rules:
Chief Justice Directive 05-01 controls inspection, copies, remote fields, protected material, and vendor access to Colorado court case records.
C.R.S. ยงยง 24-72-301 through 305 govern access to criminal justice records and permit lawful limits on inspection.
Colorado criminal-record sealing law uses offense and disposition rules; eligibility cannot be inferred from the docket alone.
